Agents/Operators Bay

The little building has some interesting lines.  When looking at the building from the parking lot (North Side) you may have noticed that something about the roof line and the long flat wall seems out of character with the rest of the building.

The reason is that a small functional addition was added by extending the soffit overhang on the East and North East corner of the building.  This addition seemed to move the ticket window from an exterior window to an interior window. Hard to know if this was the case for sure, but the window frame on the interior looking into the bay was smaller format than other windows in the building. Another idea suggested by a commenter on this blog was that this space would have improved the site lines for the agent/operator. I can certainly see that from my own viewing of passing trains.

The image above is looking from the South East corner. As you can see, the porch remains open with the consistent soffit overhang.

  1. What you call a porch is know to me as a covered passenger platform. Not sure as to the why to the addition. Seems odd that ticket sales would be made through an exterior widow. It may have been a security feature. The addition enclosure to me would be termed the Agents/Operators Bay. The addition may have also been made in giving a better line of sight to what could be seen of train activity. That line of sight would extend beyond the safety line on the platform. The safety line was a line painted on the platform with a warning to stay behind it ( to avoid being struck by a passing train).

    • Thanks for the details Steve. The room is outside of the original foundation area and was built over the town line marker, I am amazed that this was ever allowed to be done as the town boundary is required to be viewed annually. In any case, I think the building had a significantly better architectural appeal prior to this addition.

  2. At one time, most, if not all of the track switches and signals were operated by remote control. This addition was built to accommodate the operator and the control panel.

  3. Sean, this is a very cool looking building . I love all the lines of the roof I can see your challenges though and understand where you’re at in this project. It looks great I wish you all the best and I look forward to following your progress.
